Pollen Description

Shape, Size and Aperture

pollen unit: monad,  dispersal unit and peculiarities: monad,  size (pollen unit): medium-sized (26-50 µm),  size of hydrated pollen (LM): 41-50 µm,  shortest polar axis in equatorial view (LM): 41-50 µm,  longest polar axis in equatorial view (LM): 41-50 µm,  shortest diameter in equatorial or polar view (LM): 41-50 µm,  longest diameter in equatorial or polar view (LM): 41-50 µm,  pollen class: colporate,  polarity: isopolar,  P/E-ratio: oblate,  shape: spheroidal,  outline in polar view: circular,  dominant orientation (LM): oblique,  P/E-ratio (dry pollen): prolate,  shape (dry pollen): -,  outline in polar view (dry pollen): lobate,  infoldings (dry pollen): aperture(s) sunken,  aperture number: 3,  aperture type: colporus,  aperture condition: tricolporate, colporate,  aperture peculiarities: aperture membrane ornamented, lalongate

Ornamentation and Structure

LMornamentation LM: bacculate, clavate,  nexine: -,  sexine: -,  SEMornamentation SEM: fossulate, baculate,  suprasculpture SEM: -,  TEMtectum: -,  infratectum: -,  foot layer: -,  endexine: -,  intine: -,  wall peculiarities: -,  supratectal element: -

Miscellaneous

pollen coatings: -,  reserves in cytoplasm: -,  cell number: -,  Ubisch bodies: -

Annotations: In LM and SEM the aperture condition on hydrated pollen may be interpreted as colpate, which is also misinterpreted in literature (e.g., Reille 1992; Beug 2015); the lagongate endoporus of the colporus is only celarly visible on acetolyzed pollen grains in LM; pollen is therefore described as tricolporate (see also Feuer & Kuijt 1982).
